Separate Household Status 430-05-25-20

The following must be granted separate household status:

  1. An individual living alone.
  2. An individual living with others, but customarily purchasing food and preparing meals for home consumption separate and apart from others.
  3. Adult siblings (age 18 or older) who live together and adult children (age 22 or older) who live with their parents if they purchase and prepare meals separately.

An individual is considered to be age 22 the entire month in which they turn age 22.

  1. A companion household - An individual who is 60 years of age or over, living with others (and the spouse of such individual) who is unable to purchase food and prepare meals because they are permanently disabled or suffer from a severe, permanent disability.
  2. A homeless individual, including a resident of a public or private non-profit shelter.
  3. Residents of any federally subsidized housing for the elderly.
  4. Narcotic addicts or alcoholics and their children under age 22 who live together for the purpose of regular participation in a drug or alcohol treatment and rehabilitation program.

Prior to certifying any residents for food stamps, the worker must verify that the treatment center is authorized by FNS as a retailer or is certified by the Department of Human Services, Substance Abuse Services Unit, including a determination that the center is a non-profit organization.

 

An individual is considered to be age 22 the entire month in which they turn age 22.

  1. Disabled or blind individuals who are residents of a group living arrangements.

The worker must verify that the group home is authorized by FNS or is certified by Developmental Disabilities. Contact Developmental Disabilities at 328-8932 for certification purposes and Regional Human Service Centers for non-profit status.

  1. Individuals temporarily residing in a public or private non-profit abuse shelter.

The worker must verify that the public or private non-profit abuse shelter is authorized by FNS.
